The 2013 Hot Sizzling Summer

Summer has certainly treated us in the Northeast with more 90 degree+ days than Atlanta, GA has felt so far this year. And even though…some brave TTs love to lay out in the sun. Tibet must be quite a place! Hot, hot, hot, then bitter cold.

Even in the sizzling day, dog shows go on. Mike McLoughlin exhibited his Bee to the purple ribbon in hot, oppressive, outdoor conditions. Cooling off the winner was important. Coming along for exposure were up-and-coming Cookie, Lukilu’s Life Is But A Dream At Kiara, and her mom, Sugar.

And here at Kiara, after the fun Bay Colony Tibetan Terrier Club Specialty weekend, we ventured to the Maine show weekends –where it was also quite warm-- to complete the AKC championship for Loui-zz.

It's always a special day when a little one and a new companion family are matched up. And that great feeling you get from watching the process come with all human smiles and puppy kisses. Zara (aka Andrea of Andrea and her apple) has become the joyous new addition to the Halloren family. This special little girl will endear herself to the whole family...even the two shitzoons their parents own.

Faith & Ridley

Faith Lowell and I co-bred a litter out of her Ginger, CH Namaste Danc'N Backward 'N Heels, and my Mr. Naldo, CH Kiara Hollywood Bad Boy. There were four pups. One little girl has come here: Madonna, Namaste’s Causin’ A Commotion At Kiara.

A special boy from that litter went to the Pollack Family. After waiting for a few months to get a little boy TT, little Ridley made their boys dream come true. Ridley’s unexpected arrival was heart-warming to be able to share.

Love it when little ones get to express their happiness –but even more endearing is seeing us oldsters melt away into a lump of puppy-loving. Granddad with Ridley makes me smile. Stacy wrote:

"My 93-year-old grandfather. I thought he would never be able to get up off the floor! I think they will be very good friends."

Many notes and emails have come in about the little ones and the older ones. Some with photos others with connected stories. I am so appreciate of the many who make such wonderful, loving homes for Kiara TTs.

Karen and Charlie got to add another Deli kid to their lives.

Dennis, we've named the pup....
Reuben.....get it? Omg...Reuben's more than amazing!
Not what you expected!? Hahaaaa
So sweet, smart, easy....
Off to the vet for the second shot maƱana. They will be in love too!
Deli is so loving towards the kid and Bodi is....ummmm...adjusting!
Karen

Felix has grown up --an older bro to little Reuben.

Here is a post-bath photo from yesterday. What a hairy monster! His face is growing out from the bichon-chop a groomer did to him this winter. The video is a couple weeks old.

Loving him every day!

Karisa

Up-dates on Reuben's sisters also came in: they have made good transitions to their new companion homes.

Hi Dennis,
Hope you are well! Just wanted to let you know Maggie is doing great! We are having so much fun with her. I hired a dog trainer and she has been very helpful. Maggie is so smart. It's obvious you did such a nice job with her when she was with you!
I'm taking her to the vet for a wellness check on Tues. I'm hoping they will have some advice for me on how to get her to eat more. She still isn't eating a ton.
Hope you like the picture!
All the best,
Megan

Hello Dennis... Sadie has adjusted well... Thank you. Ali

Getting special news from the more mature set is always appreciated. Cooper has made quite a unique contribution to his loving owners.

Cooper was on cover of Section B of Hartford Courant.  My mother will be sending you full article it is about therapy dog program she is taking with him.

I knew you would like this.  I will be taking him out for his Grand this summer.  Also plan to have him at nationals. I take him to class with Rose Chandless in Taunton MA if you want to practice.

Travis

Two wonderful gentle TTs have crossed over the rainbow bridge. Their owners have sent in sweet obituaries helping to commemorate their lives. Although their contributions were totally different, these two gentlemen exemplify the kind of nature their TT family brings to their companion families and the worlds they graced with the many friends they made along the way.

Hi Dennis, Monty passed away yesterday morning. He was such a sweet dog. That truly is the best word to describe him. He brought us so much JOY! He joined our family at the perfect time. He grew up with my kids who are now 19 and 18. He received so much attention from the flow of constant teenagers going through this place. He brought a smile to anyone's face that he met. Sue and I took him for a 3 mile walk every night and he had so many friends, canine and human. You could trust him around the smallest of children and the oldest of adults. He will be missed in this house and far beyond its walls. Lou

Just wanted to let you all know that our sweet noble Deli has passed away this evening. He's been slowly fading over these last few weeks, and at his age, it's not totally unexpected. But what is very amazing and cool is that he sired another litter of pups this past March and we now have 'Reuben' to help carry on his spirit to hang out with brother Bodie.
Living life to the very end, he went on walks and seemed 'one of the family' to the very end.
Charlie and I loved his independence, his love of life and his food, and his unique character.
We will miss him dearly....

Bodie & Reuben too

Late Spring

Spring finally arrived and everything warmed up...summer is coming. I always enjoy the season turning and await the various bloomings spring offers. But the coming summer is full of color. And full of dog shows.

There were a couple Spring events. Louise earned a couple points toward her championship; she’s now just a few singles away. Most of the “exhibiting” has gone on in handling class. Q-Tip and Lucy have attended almost every week: refining their ring presence to help them show to their best in the up-coming summer shows. And it paid off already! Lucy took a third in a Puppy Group full of quality pups. And that's Miss Elizabeth Valovic, Lucy's co-breeder, smiling with the outcome of her efforts.

And across the seas, in Sweden, Lucy's sister Tessie continues to do her thing with her new owner, Anke Slevin of Nivels Tibetan Terriers. Their dad's, Sayme, owners sent a comparative photo of Tessie and Samye I love. TTs in action!

And nearer-by Mike McLoughlin has been busy with his Bee (Lukilu Little Song of Mine) at the dog shows. Here is the result of one of the events.

The much anticipated Rain x Deli pups arrived. The four developed beautifully and are all in their homes. Karen and Charlie (Papa Deli’s owners) took a beautiful pup from the litter…knowing this would be Deli’s last litter. Deli is an old man…but he did a great job. Two other sisters went off to live with their new companion families. That left a beauty I planned to keep here at Kiara: Vienna, Kiara Tempset.
"Vienna"

And the McLoughlins have a new bloom too, Vienna’s cousin, Cookie.  Miss Sugar and Cuervo are the proud parents. Proud that they have delivered such a beauty!

Even Faith Lowell’s Ginger, CH Namaste Dancing Backward ‘N Heels, has great Mom-News. She has mothered a lovely litter of four with Mr. Naldo, CH Kiara Hollywood Bad Boy. Looking at all these photos one would think the golden brindles have taken over! Just as the genes fell...parents are black, white, and gold...as well as golden brindle.

And love receiving the news and photos from all the TT family friends and owners.

Hello Dennis,

I hope you are well after this stressful week.

Our boy celebrated his first birthday last week and is just as delightful as ever! He got a few plantains in his food as a treat and got to make a trip to the dog park!

We just signed a lease in Brookline for next year! Will have to bring him for a visit this summer.

Take care!
Karisa, Nisha, and Felix

Hi Dennis hope all is well with your and your gang in Danvers.  I just wanted to say hi and send  a spring greeting from Miss Thing. Here she is on our walk today. As you might guess from this picture, she loves our off-leash walks in the woods. She has become such a wonderful part of our family.

Warm regards and happy spring!  Laura

KDee resting after her grooming.Last weekend we went to West Palm, FL entered 2 shows. The first day we won the puppies and showed at the end of the day in an all puppy show. In our group we came in 3rd. We came in behind a Dalmatian and a Standard Poodle who were about a year old, 1 point for the day.  The next day for another point we were Best of Winners. We had many people asking about the line.  Here are 2 pictures the day before the show just after grooming  will be getting a pro pic for winners and will send that along when it arrives. Until then have a great day Debbie and clan.

I have been meaning to write you and tell you how wonderful Boomer is.  He has more personality than most humans. He is enjoying the other dogs, walks on trails, chasing chickens (which is not so cool but rather funny), rides in the car and especially playing outside with his pals.

He is a very good eater, thus trains easily.  I love him too much. Stacey R

Hope you are doing well.

Happy Valentine's Day from Panda Stephan!

"Gabby"

Bay Colony Tibetan Terrier Club had their annual Specialty during the Topsfield Show weekend. There were good entries each day for the three AKC shows and an exceptional entry for the Specialty evening show. The Kiara TTs and their other families supported these events with many of our TTs represented. Sue Meluzin's Gabby (Zin-Pa's Gossip Girl) took a reserve winner's bitch at the first day's event and her Winnifred (Zin-Pa's Winnifred the Woebegone) took the reserve winner's bitch placement the next day and then at night, at the BCTTC Specialty and the following day, her Elvira (Zin-Pa's Mistress of the Dark)  went reserve again to major points. Both Passion, CH Kiara All Fired Up, and her grand-dad Yogi, CH Kiara Harlem Night of Zin-Pa, were awarded "Selects" and earned Points toward their Grand-Championships. And it was an exceptional moment when I got to help Mike and Marie McLoughlin show in the brood bitch class: Sadie (CH Kiara Harlem Song) followed by her daughters, Rosie (CH Lukilu Everything's Coming UP Roses at Kiara) and Bee (Lukilu Little Song of Mine).  It was wonderful seeing everyone and especially nice to see my nearest and dearest.

New Year: Winter 2013

It was a wonderful Holiday Season. Very grateful to all for the many greeting that came in the mail, on the phone, or through the internet --complete with photos and stories of TTs and their human companions. Sharing is a very satisfying, warming expression. It helped make the perfect Christmas.

And since the Holiday Season, I have received more photos, stories, and up-dates. Love to get these so keep connected and keep them coming.

Dear Dennis,

I hope you are well! Felix is doing very well and is enjoying this snowy season very much. I practically have to pick him up and carry him inside because he can't get enough of the white stuff.

In the next message I am sending some snowy photos of Felix, some from the recent 35" we got here in New Haven. Thank you again for allowing us to take him home, he is the highlight of every day and we love him to pieces.

Karisa

Hi Dennis,

I just wanted to send you this picture. Ranger is fitting in so well with our family, especially with Jackson and Scoot!! Hope all is well with you.

Happy Valentine's Day from Panda Stephan!

Rosie's little family of six all found exceptional, loving homes. Tessie (alias June) went all the way to Sweden to live out her life with momma Rosie's breeder, Anki Slevin of the Nivels Kennel. We have heard many stories and have received many photos of her enjoying her new home. This is one of my favorite of Tessie in the Swedish snowy landscape.

Tessie didn't travel alone. Co-breeder, Elizabeth Valovic, had the incredible opportunity to travel with her and enjoy a week long experience of Swedish hospitality. She stayed with Anki, but got to meet and visit many TT breeders in Sweden, and has come home with a long list of new friends. I'm green with envy; perhaps the next time.... And while Elizabeth was there, she had to opportunity to fulfill a buck-list item (though she's way too young to even be contemplating them) and exhibited TTs --including little Tessie-- at a European show. It was a Tibetan Breeds extravaganza.  Tessie took a 2nd in her class out of many bitch puppies --but the judge loved her, wanting to put her up first, but because Tessie was favoring a rear leg earned from learning a lesson the previous day from Nivels' in-house, top-bitch, the judge explained that she could not honor her with a championship certificate.

The Judge's mandatory critique: "4 months old, very pretty, well balanced head, well balanced in body, lovely shape, excellent topline, would prefer a little more angulation in front. She moves well in front and holds a lovely shape but she is moving a little lame behind which is a shame as I like her a lot!"

Makes one wonder how different our very subjective judging technique here in the States would be if judges had to orally report in the ring about their findings and placements as they have to do in Sweden.

Tessie's sister, Lucy (Kiara L Dharma's Doll), remained here at Kiara. She is growing up nicely and will fulfill dreams here. Elizabeth and I are very grateful to Jim and Dee Aher (Dad, Samye's owner) and Catherine Shearer (Samye's breeder) for helping this breeding happen.

Dee and Catherine --and Alice Smith-- joined us for a puppy day when the litter was 10 weeks old. It was an informative, enjoyable experience. Six little ones racing about, stacked repeatedly on the table, photoed and played with, made for our own little in-house, TT exhibition. What fun!

And there is a little show news. Jim and Debbie Griffith report a win on little Miss KDee, Ring Brook KDee. Entered in the puppy class for her first shows in Florida, Miss KDee earned praise and even got her first point. Debbie sent a little video of KDee in the ring. Watch her strut her stuff.

After many years absent from the Westminster KC show ring, I decided to return. Mostly because the venue had been changed. The day-time judging was to be conducted at the Piers --a more spacious, brighter, cooler, less-crowded location than Madison Square Garden had offered exhibitors and dogs. It was the first time I left the experience wanting to return again --and not vowing "never-again" until I could once again forget the experience. So, if I have something show, I already plan to enter next year.

Passion, CH Kiara All Fired Up, was my companion. She is newly "championed" and young for the experience, but exhibited well in a class filled with older, very seasoned, many-hornered TTs with their exhibitors. Included in that honored list was cousin Rosie, CH Lukilu Everything's Coming Up Roses At Kiara, with her very capable, loving breeder-owner Mike McLoughlin. Rosie and Passion had fun while helping many breed enthusiasts and the constant stream of dog-loving spectators enjoy touching, patting, and photographing them. They did it with a TT smile and the wonderful temperament Kiara TTs have become known for.

Mike and Rosie got special attention from the New York City area press for being a local exhibitor. At one point, camera lights were flashing at the couple so much it was like being at a red carpet event in Hollywood! A lovely piece was placed in the Stamford newspaper.

http://www.ctpost.com/news/article/Terrier-commutes-from-Stamford-for-big-show-4269889.php?fb_action_ids=4584819893723&fb_action_types=og.likes&fb_source=aggregation&fb_aggregation_id=246965925417366#src=fb

Matthew McDermott (of McDermott Photos www.mcdermottphotos.com) took several candid shots of Mike and Rosie in the benching area for NYC newspapers. Again, lights flashing catching everyone's attention. "I'm ready for my close-up, Mr. McDermott."

Mike reports that the TT stork made a visit to the McLoughlins. The lovely Miss Sugar has a new bundle of brindle and white joy. She (as it is a little girl) gets to enjoy all of the milk, all of the love licks --and clean-up licks, and all of the mother watchfulness...not only from Mom Sugar but from the whole family.

Here at home we're also preparing to usher in a new litter. It is a repeat breeding between Rain, CH Kiara Pitter Patter, and Karen & Charlie's Deli, CH Namaste Adeste Fidelis. For those who have shown an interest in this fortuitous breeding is a reminder of the first breeding: a wonderful YouTube video Karen made while deciding on which little one she and Charlie wanted to bring home to Vermont. The new pups will certainly resemble their older siblings.

Momma Rain and the first litter.

Winter finally arrives in the Kiara dog yard.

We're weathering the winter well. TTs love the richness their DNA has imprinted on them from their roof-of-the-world, Tibetan experience. Burrowing through over-the-head snow, muzzles and paws snow laden, their joy is well evident.

Looking at all the photos of TTs --some from the recent past and others from years gone by-- on Facebook by the many TT owners and breeders have made me feel a bit nostalgic.  It has made me look back in my own archives of photos and share some of the beauties that helped produce the Kiara TTs walking about today. Think I may take the opportunity in the next few News & Reviews to post a few from the Kiara History.  Here are three worth taking a look at:
CH Kiara Great Balls of Fire
WHISKEY
CH Tsering Shampsang Mingma
ASLAND
CH Kiara Ain't Misbehavin'
ZACK
